Hey folks, this weekend I heard tons of Kentuckians pronouncing the word “memoir” “mem-wahhhhh” (I could easily have carried that out for at least another dozen h’s). I just wanted to say that “memoir” (“mem-wahr”) is a completely acceptable pronunciation, especially in Kentucky. Technically, in the United States, at least, the latter is more correct. The other sounds…just absurd in a place like Lexington. I mean, Versailles, KY is just ten minutes down the road and we pronounce it “Ver-SAILS”. Don’t fight your dialect, folks. The only time it’s appropriate to say “mem-wahhh” in Kentucky is if you’re eating at a French restaurant and suddenly Pierre-Auguste Renoir comes waltzing through the door.
